Question: My computer gets slower everyday - what can I do to fix this?

Answer: In order to keep a car healthy, you need to change the oil regularly.
To keep a PC healthy, you need to defragment the hard disk monthly.

For Windows XP:

  1. click the START button,
  2. then click (ALL) PROGRAMS
  3. then click ACCESSORIES
  4. then click SYSTEM TOOLS
  5. then click DEFRAGMENTER
  6. then click DEFRAGMENT

Earlier versions of Windows have the defragmenter in a similar location.

Question: I lost critical data that was on my PC - how do I prevent this from happening again?
Is it possible to recover the data?

Prevention Answer : Make copies of critical data (files) on diskettes, CDs, DVDs or external hard drives.  For diskettes, CDs and DVDs, put them in your safety deposit box or a relative's house.
If you do this not only are you protected from computer problems, but you are also protected from natural disasters like fires or hurricanes.

After file or data loss Answer:  STOP using the PC immediately!  The more you use the PC, the more likely that the files will not be recoverable.  When files are deleted - they are not total gone - but can only be recovered if you do not  write new files onto the same space.  You do not have control of this so - STOP using the PC immediately and contact someone for help.  In many cases, I can help.

Call: 954-647-8349 and ask for data recovery services

Question: MyPC or other equipment has been damaged or destroyed by lightening.  I had a surge protector - what went wrong?

A: A $10 surge protector, will not protect your PC in case of a power surge, sag or lightening in your area. While a $45 surge protector purchased at a PC store, or online PC manufacturer will. Read the packaging - many of the more reputable makers back up their claims with a guarantee to repair or replace your equipment, should it be damaged.

I prefer to use a battery backup with surge protection.

In South Florida, this can keep your PC from crashing due to a power outage.  If the outage lasts for more than a few minutes, a properly installed battery back with surge protection can automatically shut down your computer (softly), when you are not at home.

You need at least a 500VA for your average desktop machine.

Question: MY PC got a virus - now what?

Answer: Make copies of critical data (files) on diskettes, CDs, DVDs or external hard drives.  Even if you also copy the virus onto the disk, the virus can often be removed from the files when they are returned to your computer.

Next search for an online virus scanner.  Panda software and Trend Micro both have online virus scanners that in many cases can remove the viruses for free.

If you are unable to remove the virus using an online scanner - STOP using the PC and contact someone for help.  In many cases, I can help.

Call: 954-647-8349 and ask for virus removal services

Lastly, if the reason your PC got a virus is that you have no anti-virus software on your PC or the software is expired - buy and install (or resubscribe) to an anti-virus software.  The most well know are Norton Anti-Virus sold by Symantec, and McAfee Anti-Virus.  You can purchase the software on CD in a store or buy and download them onto your computer, if you have a high speed connection.

Question: Keeping your data secure - especially with high speed connections.

Answer: FireWalls

In the days of high speed Internet connections, you need a firewall.

Microsoft has a built in firewall you can activation, but Norton and McAfee make a much more detailed firewall to keep people on the Internet from coming back into you PC and getting your important information.

Think of a firewall as a brick wall.  There are 32767 possible ways to access your computer (think of each of these as a brick in a wall).  Firewalls block all of these except ports (bricks) that are commonly used.  For example port (brick 80) is normal Internet browsing.  This should be open..
